Well, hey.

The Situation Abroad has rumors going to that LJ might well go away completely, and that led to me downloading CSVs of my old entries, and (finally) getting DW to scrape entries and upload them here (old comments, still in progress).

And what do I find myself doing?

WRITING AN ENTRY HERE. A proper entry. An original content entry.

It's my 50th birthday, and on my 40th, I posted about what had happened in my 30s, and how I was looking forward to seeing what was to come in my 40s.

...my 40s were *rough*, folks. ROUGH.

But I now own my own apartment (right across the street from where I lived during all my LJ days), I have a cat (Mycroft!) and a (service) dog (Sancho!). I work at the Library of Congress doing good work for the good of all people. And maybe just maybe my 50s will be kind.

Addiction.

(I assume others are also getting the chance to solve one problem, so someone else is on the whole world peace thing, right?)

I celebrate all the December holidays. All of them. I don't care what faith tradition or culture it comes from.

A pirate walks, uncomfortably, into a bar. The bartender looks the pirate up and down and says, "I'm sorry, fella, I just gotta ask: do you know you have a ship's wheel in your pants?" The pirate nods. "Aye, it's drivin' me nuts."
1 - 2 tablespoons olive oil
2 packages chicken sausage (8 sausages or 8 servings of sausage total) (we used 1 package chicken & truffle, 1 of chicken & apple)
1 lb carrots, chopped
1/2 onion, finely chopped (or onion powder in a pinch, which is what we did)
3 14-oz cans of white beans, drained (we used Great Northerns) or equal amount home-cooked (soak and cook a pound, you'll be fine)
1/2 cup chicken stock (or white wine, frankly; we were drinking red, so we went with stock)
sage, and quite a bit of it
salt, to taste
herbs de Provence, if you feel like it
2 big bags pre-washed spinach
4 oz fresh bread, pulverized or grated into crumbs
1 - 2 additional tablespoons olive oil

Preheat oven to 350°F.

In your absolutely largest stove-top-safe skillet or wide Dutch oven, heat up 1 - 2 tablespoons olive oil over medium-high heat. Brown sausages on all sides; remove and hold. Add carrots and onion (with salt) to skillet, and cook until they start to soften (carrots should still have a little bite to 'em). Add chicken stock -- watch out for the steam! Add beans, stir to combine. Add 2 tablespoons or more of sage, and a couple good pinches of other herbs. Stir. Slice sausages and add to beans. Stir. Taste, and correct seasonings. Stir some more. Stir occasionally. You're going to want to let some of the stock cook off, until it all starts to feel a little thick, a little more stew-like than soup-like. The beans should be threatening to pop.

While you're doing this, nuke the spinach per bag directions. Throw cooked spinach into your 9 x 13 dish. (Optional: if you hate greens, don't do this. Otherwise, do)

Spoon out into your favorite 9 x 13 dish, stir to incorporate the spinach (if you're using it), smooth out on top, and pop into the oven. Set your timer for 60 minutes.

Go have a glass of wine, eat a slice of crusty bread with a little cheese.

Go back to the kitchen! Take 4 oz of that crusty bread, and either pulverize it in a food processor, or grate it on a box grater. I have a food processor, I used a grater. Add another tablespoon or more of sage, and a good hearty pinch of other herbs; toss to combine. Drizzle with 1 - 2 tablespoons olive oil, until everything has been touched by oil, but nothing is drenched.

When the timer goes off, slide the casserole out of the oven. Sprinkle the crumbs over the top, and smooth it out. Pop it back in the oven for 10-15 minutes until fragrant and golden.

Let stand for 5 minutes.

Scoop up.

Serve on its own, or with some crusty bread.

Go back for seconds.

Have more wine, or some beer.
[livejournal.com profile] redwink's house was broken into.

A neighbor saw the guy who did it, and got a good description. The cops have taken fingerprints. Kelly and the kids weren't home (thank God) -- it happened about an hour before they got home. He smashed the big window in the kitchen, grabbed Bob's old desktop computer and the digital camera, and left through the back/kitchen door. So far, the only stuff that seems to be missing is the one computer and the camera.

Ripping out the computer also ripped out Kelly's wifi, so she's internet-less tonight and until it gets sorted out. It also ripped out her land line; she has a cell, though, and it's currently recharging.

Damn it all, when does Kelly get to catch a break???

It's nearly time for the Georgetown Gilbert & Sullivan Society's production of RUDDIGORE!

If you have a business and want to put an ad in our program, go here to place a business ad or email me. Least expensive ad is $10, which is affordable for just about everyone ... got a fundraiser you want to highlight? An Etsy store? $10 can get you eyeballs.

If you want to place a friends/family/alumni ad, you can do that, too! Want to give a shout out to a graduating 3L or two? Want to cheer on a certain person's mad hornpipe skilz (this year: he doesn't kill anyone in the play!)? Give people a sign of your support and good will. Again, least expensive is $10.

The forms don't show the smallest/cheapest ad... if you want what we're calling the "business card" ad, best to email me w/ your order.

Ads are due this coming Monday.

When I was home in January, my mom gave me the quilt her grandma made her when mom was a young girl. It's pieced of rectangles, each probably about 10 inches by 4 inches. Fabric: old and shiny...nothing organic going on...I'm going to say "acetate, mostly". It was tied together over a wool blanket, with a shiny acetate (again, guessing) backing.

It's falling apart. Mom gave it to me to see if I wanted to try and fix it, or find some use for it. I don't think it's fixable in its current state, and, much as I love the story behind it (this is what kept my mother warm through her late childhood and her teenaged years until she moved out and married Dad), it's not going to have much Oomph for a restorer ... or much life on the bed of a family member, truth be told.

It pains me to say this, as I'm really against cutting up old textiles...

...but I think I'm going to cut it up.

I think I'm going to cut apart the rectangles that aren't frayed and torn, and use them to make yo yos. I would then use the yo yos to create/cover a pillow, and give the pillow to my mother (possibly for her mid-March birthday, but more likely for Mother's Day in May).

Thoughts?

Any quilters or textile lovers out there want to gasp in horror and talk me out of this?

Isn't that a helluva first line for a book?

Golly Moses, do I love Odie!

The highlights look completely 100% natural. If you didn't know I'd had 'em done, you would just think I'd been able to go to the water park every Friday, instead of just that once.

He trimmed my bangs and took out some of the weight all around, and, well... It looks like we're back to the hair cut in this animated, silly icon of me. Just a couple more months of growth!

HAPPINESS IS!!!

[livejournal.com profile] heidi8's pink Kodak camera and blue Sidekick LX were taken at Disney's Splash Mountain at around 4:30 PM on Sautrday, June 7, and she's trying to get the SD cards that were in the camera and Sidekick back; they're the only copies she has of those photos. She's asking people to pass on this message via their LJ, blog, facebook, etc., in hopes of catching the eye of the person who took it - or someone who knows who did. If that person sees this post, they can go to her livejournal post at http://heidi8.livejournal.com/913939.html and post anonymously (it'll be screened) so she can coordinate with them about getting the cards - and, ideally, the rest of the contents of the bag - returned.

Brussels sprouts, shallots, and bacon roasting in the oven.
Brussels sprouts, shallots, and bacon roasting in the oven.
I've posted about my love for the sprouts from Brussels before, but here I go again, with the recipe I made last night at Supper Club.

Roasted Brussels Sprouts and Shallots with Bacon

2 lbs Brussels sprouts
1 shallot
6 strips high-quality thick-cut bacon

Preheat oven to 400°F. Take a 9x13 pan and lay out the bacon; nothing should overlap (trim if you need to to make sure of this), and put it in the oven (center-ish rack) for 10-15 minutes. While the bacon renders its fat and starts to crisp up, prepare your sprouts. To do this, peel off the loose and dark outer leaves, cut off the stem, and cut each sprout into quarters. Then, chop up your shallot.

When the bacon has gotten crispy (or, as crispy as you want to let it...I went for "cooked but still pliable"), remove it to a paper towel-lined plate. Toss the sprouts and shallots in the rendered fat in the 9x13 pan, and choose which way you're going with your bacon. You have two options:
  1. Reserve the bacon until right before serving, crumbling it on top of the dish at the last minute.
  2. Cut the bacon into lardons, and toss it back into the dish with the sprouts and shallots before roasting.
I went with option #2.

Put the pan back in the oven, and let roast for 40-60 minutes, stirring once or twice during the process. They should be getting caramelized and yummy-smelling near the end, and a fork should go through them with little resistance.

Easy-peasy, and dirties very few dishes. A great go-to side dish for holiday meals.
